FYE 102: Leader, Mentor, Agent of Change
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to continue to work of FYE 101 as well as cultivate essential leadership skills and styles, foster team-building capabilities, and enhance effective communication techniques in a collaborative setting. Additionally, the course will focus on the creation and implementation of a peer mentoring program aimed at supporting first-year college students. This course is ideal for students interested in leadership roles, student government, or campus organizations, as well as those looking to make a positive impact on their college community.
FYE 102 is a 1 credit hour course, offered in both the fall and spring semesters, to any student interested in developing their self-leadership skills or participating in the FYE Peer Mentoring program.
COURSE OUTCOMES:
- Develop personal leadership style and strengths: Analyze various leadership theories and frameworks to identify personal leadership strengths and areas for growth. Create a personal leadership philosophy that aligns with individual values, skills, and professional goals.
- Master team-building and collaboration techniques: Demonstrate effective collaboration strategies in diverse team settings by utilizing conflict resolution, active listening, and consensus-building skills.
- Enhance verbal and written communication skills for leadership: Anaylze effective communications tailored to varying leadership scenarios, and utilize constructive feedback to refine communication approaches and improve interpersonal interactions.
- Design and participate in a peer mentoring program: Establish mentorship goals and implement strategies to foster a positive and supportive mentoring relationship. Continually assess the effectiveness of the mentoring program through reflection, feedback, and performance evaluations.
- Gain practical experience in mentoring first-year students: Apply mentoring techniques to support first-year students in their academic, social, and personal development, and demonstrate adaptability and problem-solving skills in addressing the diverse needs of mentees.
