Navigate Your Transition to
Mount St. Joseph University with Ease.
The transition to college is a big step. Our First-Year Programming equips you with the tools and support you need to thrive.
The time in a student’s life when they experience the most amount of change is when they graduate high school and begin college, because nearly every aspect of their identity, environment, and daily routines changes. This can be unsettling for a wide variety of reasons- living independently, stepping up in academic rigor, expanding responsibilities, changes in social circles- and the convergence of all of this at one time can be a challenge (and also very exciting)! And, FYE is here to help!
First-Year Experience (FYE) is a course designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge needed to be successful during their college years and beyond. Through class workshops, hands-on activities, class discussions, and guidance from various campus professionals, students will work to develop stronger success habits in the areas of:
- Time Management & Study Skills: Learn strategies to balance coursework, personal life, athletics or campus orgs, and more.
- Campus Resources & Support Services: Discover where to find help when you need it.
- Wellness & Resilience: Build habits that support mental and physical health.
- Campus Engagement and Belonging: Engage in conversations that foster a welcoming community.
- Goal Setting and Career Exploration: Start planning for your future early.
Data shows that students who complete an FYE program have higher GPAs, higher retention rates, and assimilate more quickly to campus life than compared to their peers who did not take the course.
Students who succeed in college often experience greater career stability, increased earning potential, healthier lifestyles, and higher levels of self-esteem and self-efficacy. They also tend to be more engaged in their communities and civic life, contributing to a higher overall quality of life for themselves and their future families.
