Keynote Speaker
Noted Journalist and Cincinnati native Nick Clooney will be speaking at the Mount as part of the Freshman Author Series on September 25 at 7p.m. The speaking engagement will take place in the Mount’s College Theatre. Clooney will speak in the morning and afternoon to students on a wide array of topics including the history of broadcast journalism, broadcast ethics, the 1953 McCarthy hearings and his thoughts on the current state of journalism.
Each year, incoming freshmen at the Mount are required to read a novel or screenplay each summer before school begins, which they discuss in their first semester seminar. This year’s selection, “Good Night and Good Luck,” a screenplay written by George Clooney, Nick’s son, and Grant Heslov, explored the conflict between journalist Edward R. Murrow and U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy during the early years of broadcast journalism. The movie was nominated for six Academy Awards.
About Nick Clooney
Clooney began working in radio full-time when he was 17 years old in his hometown of Maysville, Kentucky. He was a television anchor, reporter, managing editor, and news director in Lexington, Cincinnati, Salt Lake City, Buffalo, and Los Angeles. He was also a columnist for 18 years for the Cincinnati and Kentucky Post. Clooney has published three books, including “The Movies That Changed Us.” He has accumulated numerous awards and honors over the years including an Emmy for commentary and three Emmy nominations for his work on American Movie Classics. This year, he was named a “Great Living Cincinnatian” by the Greater Cincinnati Regional Chamber of Commerce.
