MSJ’s Brand Identity Design Class Collaborates with Local Non-profit, The Hive, During the Spring 2024 Semester.

The Brand Identity Design course at Mount St. Joseph University is taught by Kurt Grannan, M.F.A., an associate professor of Graphic Design. When describing the Brand Identity Design course, Kurt says, “I have had the opportunity to work with various local nonprofit clients. The course structure resembles a co-op position since we work directly with clients. Emily Merz from the Career and Experiential Education Center has been a valuable resource. This course is now in its second year of offering a service-learning credit, in collaboration with Caroline Meyer, also from the Career and Experiential Education Center.

As luck would have it, last year, Caroline Meyer connected us with The Hive, a nonprofit organization in Cincinnati. We worked closely with Chris LaRue, the Executive Director of The Hive: A Center for Contemplation, Art, and Action. Our collaboration aimed to enhance The Hive’s brand and help them develop a brand extension to transition their services from individuals to local small businesses.” Kurt Grannan

The work that the MSJ Brand Identity Design students provided for the Hive included:

  • Brand Strategy Development
  • Audience Engagement and Community Building
  • A Sub-Brand Logo
  • Customizable Pitch Deck
  • Brochure Design

Kurt shares “This collaboration was a wonderful experience for me and provided a valuable real-world learning opportunity for the students.”

Chris LaRue, the Executive Director of The Hive, explains, “Working with the Brand Identity Design students at Mount St. Joseph University was a great experience. There are so many things that are in my blind spots being so close to my work. Having intelligent, creative, and fresh minds collaborate to imagine new concepts, logos, and branding was beyond refreshing. We're now positioned to be more dynamic in our branding. Additionally, seeing the students' passionate determination and risk-taking to create something resonant was a really rewarding experience. I look forward to other collaboration opportunities in the future." Chris LaRue

Congratulations to the MSJ students, faculty, and staff who contributed to the Brand Identity Design course partnership with the Hive!
