MSJ graduates Brittany and Nick Gunnell share a love story written in the stars.
Neither Brittany nor Nick could have imagined that an astronomy night class at the Mount would introduce either of them to their soulmate, but Venus was already in orbit.
Brittany grew up in Harrison, Ohio, and felt drawn to the Mount since it was close to home. Additionally, as an education major, the choice to choose the Mount felt natural due to the support the Mount’s education program provides to its students. As well as majoring in education, Brittany would also join the dance team at the Mount. As for Nick, a Fairfield resident, he felt compelled to play baseball for the Mount and thus decided to attend the university as a business major.
Brittany and Nick’s Love Goes Interstellar
Their love story began with an astronomy night class in 2016. They talked throughout the first few classes, but the spark really formed when they had to share a telescope together to stare into the night sky. Brittany and Nick quickly grew inseparable. If Nick had a baseball game, you could expect Brittany to be in the sands. If Brittany had a dance performance, Nick would be supporting her from the sidelines. Since Nick lived in a house close to the Mount, Brittany would come over to his house between classes and teaching whenever she could. Their friends joke that their love was “written in the stars.”
Brittany and Nick would go on to have plenty of fun moments together and support each other when needed. Nick supported Brittany throughout all of her practicums and student teaching. On one occasion, Brittany and Nick both got injured in their respective sports and each had surgery within days of each other. Brittany jokes, “We recovered together!”
Brittany would graduate in 2018 before earning her masters in 2020, and Nick would graduate with a degree in business in 2019. They bought a house together in May of 2020, and got engaged in July of that year. Nick had planned a big proposal for Brittany, but unfortunately, Brittany had experienced a passing in her immediate family on the morning of the day he had planned to propose. Nick decided to propose the next day in a simpler, yet just as sweet fashion. “He decided to propose the next day in our house just the two of us!” Brittany recalls.
Brittany and Nick married in June of 2021, then went on to have two beautiful daughters in June of 2022 and January of 2024. They’re both infinitely grateful to the Mount for bringing them together.
“Thanks Mount St. Joseph University, for helping me meet my soul mate!” Brittany exclaims.
