Transfer Student Madison Lake

What is your year and major? What is your anticipated graduation year?

I am a sophomore studying Biology, with a Pre-PA concentration. I am expected to graduate in December of 2026.

Why did you choose the Mount?

I chose the Mount because I realized from my time at Indiana University that I needed smaller classes with professors who I could connect with, and be somewhere where I could be supported. My professors knowing my name is something that you can't get at a big university. The Mount was everything I needed, plus more.

How did the Mount help accommodate your transfer needs?

From the time I toured campus to when I had my first day of classes, I felt nothing but support and encouragement from the faculty here. They went above and beyond to transfer all of my credits, make personalized plans for my degree, and made sure I was a part of the decisions.

Are you involved in any student organizations or extracurriculars? If so, how have these supported your academic success?

I am currently not a part of any extracurriculars at MSJ, but just recently applied for Tri-Beta!

How do you manage your course load along with other obligations?

I make sure that I do not let deadlines and exams creep up on me and surprise me. All of my professors utilize time in class very effectively, so it makes doing homework and studying for exams that much easier compared to learning the material by yourself outside of class.

Are there any staff or professors you would like to credit who helped accommodate your transfer experience?

Dr. Elizabeth Murray has gone above and beyond for everything I have encountered here at the Mount since day one. I am so lucky to have her as my advisor, as well as one of my professors.

Describe one of your favorite memories at the Mount so far.

My favorite memory was going to the wrong classroom on the very first day of classes, not knowing where to go. When I went to the wrong classroom, I met someone (who is now one of my friends!) that actually was in the same boat as me (transferred to the Mount from IU). We figured out where to go together, and still laugh about it now, because we wonder how we ever got lost!

What advice would you give to someone looking to transfer to the Mount?

If you are looking into transferring, do it! I knew the first month at IU that I did not fit in there, but stayed for the full year and was so unhappy... All because was scared to admit I did not like it. Transferring to me was a breath of fresh air, and got me in a place where I have never been so happy with my education. Take a tour of MSJ, it is an amazing place.

What was your experience like connecting with students on campus?

There is always someone willing to help out. With the small class sizes, you will be able to get to know quite a few of your classmates, which makes studying for exams and making friends even easier. Being a transfer, I did not think I would be able to find those who I could connect with, but it has been quite the opposite.

Can you describe your experience with the transfer scholarships and applying for them?

Thankfully, I did not have to apply for transfer scholarships the Mount, they were automatically applied! This took a lot of stress from applying to so many different scholarships off of my shoulders.

How has the Mount supported you so far?

All of my professors have been very understanding and are willing to work with you, if you put in the work. They want their students to succeed and make them proud.
