Adult transfer Mikayla finds balance as a mother and full-time student while gaining the support of her professors with assignments to ensure her success.
What is your year and major? What is your anticipated graduation year?
My year is senior, and I am and major in Special Education/Primary K-12 licensure.
What inspired you to pursue a program at the Mount?
The Education Department at the Mount inspired me to pursue the program. I did an orientation the summer of 2022 with a group of transfer students from Cincinnati State. The staff made me feel very welcomed, and they encouraged me that they would always be there to help me if I needed it.
How did the Mount support you during your adult transfer journey, to make your program goals
achievable?
The Mount has supported me tremendously through my adult transfer journey. Whenever I need help with an assignment the professors are always available and if they aren’t they will make time to be available for you!
How do you manage your course load with a job/and or your personal life?
Right now I am currently not working, however I do have a daughter who is currently in the first grade and has a busy schedule after school. What works for me is asking for help from my family members, having a consistent schedule, and knowing when to take a break. When you find a balance for you it all fits into place but staying consistent is important.
Are there any staff or professors you would like to credit who helped accommodate your transfer
experience?
Of course! There are tons of people I would like to credit! I will list them all down below:
1. Meagan Dinessen
2. Our Dean Laura Saylor
3. My advisors Karlee and Cara
4. Lucy Collier
5. Cynthia Shibinski
6. Amanda Flick
What [or who] is your biggest motivator during challenging times?
My daughter and partner! I wanted to go to school to be able to have a steady job, but I want a job that I am passionate about.
What advice would you have for other adult students looking to transfer to a 4-year college?
Some advice I would give to another adult student is have faith, ask questions, ask for help, and believe in yourself. The Mount will help you and support you through your journey. If anyone is attending the Mount it is their time to shine.
