Dear Mount Community,

Happy New Year, and welcome to the Spring Semester! I hope that each of you is filled with hope for the days to come, as we continue the important work of learning, teaching, and discovery that define our exceptional institution.

Yesterday, our campus celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with prayer and reflection, and a trip downtown to the world-renowned National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.  One of the permanent exhibits at the Freedom Center is “The Slave Pen,” built in the early 1800’s on a farm in Mason County, Kentucky, less than 60 miles from Cincinnati.  It was used by a slave trader to hold slaves before they were sold.  The first time I visited the Freedom Center, I recall the profound feelings I had seeing and learning about “The Slave Pen.”

During this week of celebrating Dr. King and his extraordinary impact on the Civil Rights Movement in our country, we are called to recognize our progress toward equality for all humans—reinforced by the permanent exhibits depicting the history of slavery in the U.S. at the Freedom Center— and the important work that still remains to achieve Dr. King’s dream of letting freedom ring for all of God’s children.

Focusing on his dream of freedom for all, I would ask that each of us recommit to the Mission we have embraced at the Mount for more than 103 years:

  • Excellence in academic endeavors
  • The integration of life and learning
  • Respect and concern for all persons
  • Diversity of culture and beliefs
  • Service to others

When we live our Mission, we further Dr. King’s dream by ensuring that all are welcome on our campus, and we demonstrate our dedication to dignity, peace, and hope for all persons throughout the world.

Indeed, I take comfort that our Community’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion will lead us into a prosperous future--May God bless us with a prosperous Spring Semester. With humility, charity, and simplicity, we honor the Mount’s mission, the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Thank You!

Dr. H. James Williams, Ph.D.
