Chairperson and Associate Professor Dr. Charles-Liscombe of the Department of Exercise Science and Integrative Health at Mount St. Joseph University has been elected to serve on the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education Board of Commissioners (CAATE), where he will serve for a 3-year term.

The CAATE is recognized by the Council of Higher Education (CHEA) as a specialty accreditor of professional programs, accrediting athletic training-specific programs at the professional, residency, and fellowship levels.

According to Dr. Charles-Liscombe, patients and employers are looking for assurances that healthcare professionals are capable of providing care in a safe manner with the best outcomes at the lowest costs. Students want the same commitments from universities to deliver on those promises as well.

The mission of CAATE works to “serve the public and profession by establishing and ensuring compliance with accreditation standards that facilitate quality outcomes, continuous improvement, innovation, and diversity to enhance athletic training education.” Peer review, transparency, and quality assurance are essential components of delivering a high-quality educational experience for students while also ensuring a qualified workforce for healthcare.

“Serving as a CAATE Commissioner enables me to work with my athletic training colleagues to provide strategic leadership for future athletic trainers, and the universities that train them,” says Dr. Charles-Liscombe. “The Department of Exercise Science and Integrative Health is committed to training students for a variety of healthcare and fitness careers. My work on the CAATE will enable me to share the best practices in healthcare accreditation with the School of Health Sciences and to prepare students for graduate study in healthcare.”

A certified and licensed athletic trainer with prior clinical experience at NCAA Division I, II, and III colleges and universities and community events, Dr. Charles-Liscombe envisions a community where everyone has the opportunity to pursue their goals and achieve optimal well-being.
