Biography:

Dr. Steve Almquist, Ph.D. is the Provost for Mount St. Joseph University. In his previous role as a Professor of English and Associate Provost for Arts and Sciences at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, he had oversight of five academic divisions and their respective chairs to ensure quality programming, to support faculty, and to manage the ongoing operations of the divisions. He has also assisted the Provost in developing a strategic academic plan and in restructuring the organizational chart for increased efficiency.

He joined the faculty in 2008, whereupon he developed a number of special topics courses and immersed himself in service opportunities at the college. In 2016, Dr. Almquist was appointed Chair of Languages and Literature, then a division of approximately fifteen faculty members from the English, Writing, and Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures programs.

After earning a B.A. in English from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota, Dr. Almquist served as a Lasallian Volunteer, teaching secondary school in St. Vincent and the Grenadines for one year and in Nyeri, Kenya, for two years. Upon returning to the States, he earned graduate degrees in English from the University of North Dakota (M.A.) and the University of Iowa (M.A., Ph.D.). His research and teaching areas include global Anglophone and American literature, with particular interest in the African Diaspora and in questions of language. He has published articles in multiple peer-reviewed journals and presented papers at regional, national, and international conferences.

Dr. Almquist lives with his wife, Leatrice, in northern Kentucky.
