The Lions 1st Scholars program is designed to help first-generation students navigate college life, providing mentorship and helping build strong networks of belonging.
First-generation college students often face unique challenges in navigating higher education, from understanding academic expectations to accessing resources and building networks of support. The Lions 1st Scholars Program was created to address these challenges by fostering a community where first-generation students feel empowered to succeed academically, personally, and professionally.
Through intentional programming, mentorship, and engagement with faculty, staff, and peers, Lions 1st Scholars gain the tools and confidence to thrive at the Mount and beyond, reinforcing the university’s mission to integrate life and learning while honoring the dignity of every person.
The program provides:
- Sense of Belonging: By engaging in intentional community-building and supportive relationships with peers, faculty and staff, Scholars foster meaningful connections and feel celebrated as valued members of the Mount community.
- Academic and Career Success: Lions 1st Scholars gain the skills, strategies, and confidence to succeed in the classroom while also developing professional knowledge, leadership abilities, and networks that prepare them for internships, employment, or graduate study.
- Personal Growth: Scholars strengthen their self-advocacy, resilience, and confidence through reflection, mentoring, and skill-building opportunities that support holistic development.
- Resource Navigation: Scholars learn to confidentiality access and utilize university systems and services, ensuring they can successfully navigate challenges and take advantages of the support available to them during and beyond their college journey.
