CINCINNATI, OH (September 27, 2018) – Mount St. Joseph University in partnership with West Side Brewing announces the tapping of the winning beer created by students Colleen Hayes and Daniel Taylor as part of this past summer’s BRW 101 beer brewing course at the Mount.

The MSJ Raz Wit will be officially tapped at West Side Brewing (3044 Harrison Avenue, Cincinnati) on Thursday, October 4, beginning at 4 p.m. The event is a kickoff to the Mount’s Homecoming festivities before the Lions’ homecoming game on Saturday, October 6, against the Manchester Spartans at 1:30 p.m. The beer will also be sold at the alumni tailgate before the Homecoming game at the Mount.

Hayes and Taylor developed the recipe as part of the Mount’s BRW 101 course and later brewed the beer at West Side Brewing. The beer is a raspberry Belgian witbier brewed with all-natural ingredients, including barley and wheat malts, flaked oats, raspberry puree, orange peel, and coriander.

The partnership between the Mount and West Side Brewing comes as no surprise. Less than two years after taking BRW 101, Kurtis Remmel joined his father, Jim Remmel; cousin Brian Willett; and Joe Mumper to open West Side Brewing in June 2017.

Remmel has stayed in touch with Mount BRW 101 instructors Tim Lawson, Ph.D., and Andy Rasmussen, Ph.D., over the past few years, sharing a brewers’ bond. The connections between West Side Brewing and the Mount have fostered a sense of community—a characteristic Westsiders are proud to claim.

“At West Side Brewing, we are excited to be working with the Westwood Civic Association and others to revitalize Westwood,” Remmel stated. “We sponsor several community events and support our fellow small business owners in the area. The Mount is in our ‘backyard,’ so the connection makes perfect sense.”

Kurtis earned his bachelor’s degree in math and chemistry from the Mount in 2008, and earned his graduate degree in engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 2010. He currently works as a chemical engineer and calls the west side of Cincinnati his home.
