When Mount St. Joseph University senior Johnathon Ewing studied abroad in Russia during fall semester, he barely spoke Russian. But when some locals learned that Ewing, a history major from outside Chicago, plays lacrosse for the Mount, that didn't stop them from inviting him to join their recreational league.
"Lacrosse is not a major sport in Russia so there aren't many places that sell lacrosse equipment," said Ewing. "They were missing pads, helmets and other pieces of equipment."
When Ewing returned to the Mount, he found old lacrosse equipment and approached MSJ men's lacrosse head coach Colin Smith about sending the unused gear to the Russian team. The lacrosse team pitched in, gathering, sorting and cleaning the old gear to send to St. Petersburg and the "White Knights" team that adopted Ewing when he did his study abroad.
"I know they'll be thrilled to receive it," Ewing said of the team effort.
