Mount St. Joseph University hosts the Austin Knowlton Kickoff Classic football game with Augustana College on Saturday, September 6 at 6 p.m. at Schueler Field. In celebration of the 25th season of football at the Mount, former football players and coaches, including the family of the late John Pont, the Mount’s first football coach and a legend among college coaches, will be honored along with the Austin Knowlton Foundation and other supporters of the university who have made a lasting impact on the football program.
Pregame activities will recognize the Austin Knowlton Foundation and former Bengal quarterback Kenny Anderson, an alumnus of Augustana, will lead the coin toss. Delhi Township trustee Cheryl Sieve will give a proclamation in celebration of the event. At halftime, Mike Schueler, a former member of the Mount’s board of trustees who funded Schueler Field, and Sandy Pont will be recognized. The Mount’s first football team and All-Americans will gather for the first time ever before a performance by the Oak Hills High School marching band.
“This is going to be a historic game as we recognize the efforts of those who made the football program what it is today at the Mount,” said Tony Aretz, Ph.D., president of the Mount. “We’re happy to have several people who served on the Mount’s board of trustees who voted to start the football tradition at the university, which grew from playing games at Oak Hills High School to having Schueler Field as our beautiful home field.”
The Mount will also celebrate Delhi Day to thank members of the community for their support. People can receive free game tickets at the customer service desks of Delhi Kroger, Delhi Remke or On the Pike Restaurant. Mount football players will personally hand out tickets in front of the Delhi Kroger on Tuesday, Sept. 2 from 6-8 p.m., in front of the Delhi Remke on Wednesday, Sept. 3 from 6-8 p.m., and On the Pike restaurant on Thursday, Sept. 4 from 6-8 p.m. They also welcome autographs and photographs.
“This is a huge deal for our guys on the team,” said Rod Huber, head football coach for the Mount. “They’re excited to meet some of the original teammates who took a chance to play for a team that had to borrow high school football fields for games. We really encourage everyone to take advantage of the free tickets to come out and cheer us on.”
